Abstract

What is the sense of studying the Church Fathers today and which is their specific contribution? Based on a theoretical sur vey on the issue, the article focuses on “The Letter of Barnabas”, to test Werner Jaeger’s hypothesis, that the relation between the Greek and Christian cultures was not one of one way, but an interchange and inculturation, mediated by the concept of Paideia . Although Christianity owes much to the Helenistic and Roman world vision, the great contribution of the Church Fathers was to provide the fundamentals of Western education in its effort to expand the vision and good news of Christianity, getting the Helenistic idea of Paideia “baptized”.
