Abstract

The Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital is the largest hospital in the Southern Hemisphere. It serves the iconic township of Soweto and neighboring areas, with a large population in its catchment area. A wide range of neurosurgical pathologies are treated at our unit, which is a quaternary neurosurgical referral unit. This presentation aims to give an overview of the spectrum of pediatric skull base tumors seen at our hospital, how we compare epidemiologically with the rest of the world, and how we meet the challenges of providing care for a complex area of neurosurgerey within the third world constraints that we face. The occurrence, presentation, diagnosis and management of these conditions in our settings will be discussed, wiith emphasis on how our particular settings and challenges define what servic we give. There will be emphasis too on our outcomes and prospects for the future.
