Abstract

This paper uses a combination of Rodger’s (1989; 1993) evolutionary model of concept analysis and Walker and Avant’s (2005) framework to facilitate a dispositional approach to analysing the concepts of hope and hopelessness as they apply to paediatric and neonatal nursing practice. Through the use of a model case as part of the concept analysis approach, the paper examines the role of the concept of hope in the adaptation/coping process within the context of paediatric critical care, including its relationship with false hope and hopelessness. Finally, the paper concludes by identifying the implications of the findings for clinical practice.
