Abstract

Packed-column supercritical fluid chromatography (PSFC) was interfaced with a quadrupole mass filter via a LC thermospray (TS) source. Only minor modifications to the source and vaporizer probe of the commercial system were required. The high pumping capacity of the interface allowed the direct introduction of the entire SFC eluent and pressure programming to 400 atm. Methane reagent gas could be introduced through a line drilled through the wall of the TS source. The system was studied in both the methane positive chemical ionization (PeI) and carbon dioxide moderated negative chemical ionization (NCI) modes using a test mixture consisting of typical propellant additives and decomposition products
