Abstract

Aerodynamic data can be obtained from small-scale, free-flight models launched from guns in aeroballistic ranges. A large, variable-density range is now being constructed in the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility (VKF) of the U.S. Air Force’s Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC). The range will be 1000 ft in length and 10 ft in diameter and is to simulate testing conditions at altitudes to 70 miles and free-flight velocities beyond 20,000 ft/sec.
