Abstract

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The transcription factor, nuclear factor kappaB (NFκB), is a heterodimeric DNA-binding protein that plays a critical role in the regulation of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as IL-1 and TNF, which might be involved in the pathology of degenerated disc disease. Recently, the transfection of decoy oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) containing the NFκB cis element has been reported to be a potential therapeutic approach for inflammatory diseases. The application of naked NFκB decoy ODN for intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration has not been examined.
