Abstract

Glutamate (Glu) is a key molecule in cellular metabolism and the most abundant excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. Glutamate dysfunction is common in neurodegenerative disorders, and likely contributes to age-related declines in cognitive functioning. Yet, only a few studies have investigated age-related changes in brain Glu, in vivo and all previous work has employed spectroscopy. Here we use a novel 7T MRI technique, Glutamate Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (GluCEST) imaging, to probe bilateral hippocampal brain Glu in healthy older adults.
