Abstract

Exposure therapy can reduce fear responses in many mental disorders, but such relief is often temporary. Conditioning research has identified three major mechanisms for the return of fear: change in physical context (renewal), the passage of time (spontaneous recovery), and an encounter with the fear-producing unconditioned stimulus (reinstatement). To better understand the return of fear, we develop computational models and use them to simulate benchmark conditioning experiments.
