Abstract

Objective To present contrast-enhanced brain and spinal MR imaging findings two patients with metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). Methods The patients presented with walking and speech disorders. The patients underwent contrast-enhanced brain and lumbar spine MR imaging. Results T2-weighted images of the brain showed abnormal hyperintensity in the deep and periventricular white matter. Postcontrast T1-weighted images of the brain showed enhancement of the cranial nerves. Postcontrast T1-weighted images of the lumbar spine displayed enhancement of the cauda equina. Conclusion MLD is one of the more common leukodystrophies with well-documented white matter findings. The contrast enhancement of cranial nerves and cauda equina may accompany the white matter findings of MLD. Contrast-enhanced brain and spinal MR imaging may prove useful in diagnosing or differentiating the various leukodystrophies.
