Abstract

Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a form of neuroendocrine carcinoma which has an exceptionally poor prognosis and arises predominantly in smokers. One type of SCLC is limited-stage SCLC (LS-SCLC) which confines the disease within a single, tolerable radiation portal. Brain metastasis is often secondary to LS-SCLC, and the leading cause of morbidity. The use of Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation (PCI) with combined therapy reduces the risk of brain metastasis. This review is to re-evaluate the overall survival (OS) of PCI in comparison with non-PCI patients with LS-SCLC.
