Abstract

Results: Replicative HEVRNA was detectable only in the placenta and not in the blood of the study group. Positive staining of placental tissue sections stained with Hep E virus antibody against the viral structural protein ORF3 was identified in all the representative cases. Hepatitis E virus particles were also observed by electron microscopy in placental tissue samples. HEV replication in placenta correlated with fetal and maternal mortality in ALF. Conclusions: The extrahepatic replication of Hepatitis E virus in human placenta is demonstrated for the first time by three methods. HEV replication in placenta is associated with the severity of disease in HEV infected pregnant women which leads to poor pregnancy outcome with high fetal mortality.
