Abstract

Chronic posttraumatic musculoskeletal pain (CPMP) is common after traumatic stress exposure (TSE) and disproportionately burdens women. We previously showed that peritraumatic circulating levels of 17β-estradiol (E2) predict CPMP recovery in women, such that higher levels of E2 predict substantially lower CPMP one year later. In the current study, we aimed to validate this finding and to explore potential molecular mechanisms mediating the relationship between peritraumatic E2 and CPMP.
