Abstract

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Ossification of anterior longitudinal ligament (OALL) is associated with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), which is characterized by extensive spinal osteophyte formation and ossification of tendons, ligaments, and fasciae. Huge ossification of cervical anterior longitudinal ligament may cause dysphagia by compressing the cervical esophagus. Symptoms of dysphagia are subjective, making the determination of an operative indication difficult. There have been no useful evaluative methods of dysphagia caused by cervical osteophytes.
