Abstract

A deficit in working memory (WM) is one of the more robust cognitive findings in some people with schizophrenia. Evidence indicates that schizophrenia is associated with both increased dopamine (DA) release and WM deficits, and it has been shown that increasing dopamine release to abnormally high levels impairs WM in non-human primates. The present study aimed to examine the influence of dexamphetamine (DEX, 0.45 mg/kg, PO), DA releasing stimulant, on verbal WM (VWM) and spatial WM (SWM). The study also aimed to examine the influence of DEX on measures of psychosis-proneness (schizotypy) in healthy volunteers and the association of DEX-induced schizotypy and WM.
