Abstract

Methods: Children with an established diagnosis of IBD between July 1987 and January 2012 were investigated in 5 university hospitals in Korea. Clinical characteristics were retrospectively evaluated by medical record review. The results were compared to EUROKIDS data. Results: 30 children with Crohn’s disease (CD) and 33 children with ulcerative colitis (UC) were identified. CD and UC showed male predominance (CD: 26boys and 4girls, UC: 25boys and 8girls). The mean age (year) at diagnosis with CD was 15.3 (6.9 17.9), with UC was 15.8 (8.8 17.7). With regard to the location and behavior of CD, 10 patients (33%) had localized to ileum (L1), 4 patients (13%) had colonic involvement (L2), 15 patients (50%) had ileocolonic involvement (L3), 1 patient (3%) had concomitant ileal and upper gastrointestinal disease (L1+L4), Stricture (B2) was observed in 6 patients (20%), penetrating disease (B3) in 3 patients (10%), non-stricturing non-penetrating disease (B1) in 21 patients (70%), perianal disease in 10 patients (33%). With regard to the extent of UC, the pancolitis type (E3) was observed in 19 patients (57%), Lt sided UC (E2) in 8 patients (24%), ulcerative proctitis (E1) in 6 patients (18.2%). The comparison of disease characteristics to EUROKIDS is summarized in the table.
