Abstract

AbstractA new waveform for the sustaining pulse for the AC PDP that improves the luminance and the luminous efficiency is presented. When the conventional sustaining pulse is used, the discharge that produces the VUV Vacuum Ultra Violet tends to be concentrated to the narrow region between the two sustain electrodes. In order to expand the VUV generating region to a wider range, efficient ITO Indium Tin Oxide shapes have been investigated. This approach often required costing complicated structure for the electrodes and showed limitation in improving the luminance. By simply changing the waveform for the sustaining pulse without changing the structure of the electrodes, more efficient discharge can be produced resulting in higher luminance and higher luminous efficiency. The experiments using the new waveform for the sustaining pulse showed luminance of 868 cd/m2 and luminance efficiency of 1.18lm/W at the sustaining frequency of 71kHz. It is 30% and 181% improvement compared to the luminance of 667cd/m2 and to the luminous efficiency of 0.42 lm/W measured using the conventional sustaining pulse respectively.
