Abstract
Genome-wide DNA methylation changes with age, providing a means of calculating the biological age of a biospecimen. Algorithms, known as “epigenetic clocks,” calculate methylation values at specific CpG sites to estimate epigenetic age. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) poses an important neurodevelopmental context in which to study epigenetic aging. Advanced epigenetic age could be attributed to cumulative psychosocial stress – the process thought to explain epigenetic age acceleration in schizophrenia and PTSD. Alternatively, ‘younger’ epigenetic age in ADHD could be explained by developmental immaturity.
