Abstract
The Healthier Options for Public Schoolchildren (HOPS) Study tests the feasibility of a holistic nutrition and healthy lifestyle management program in the elementary school setting. HOPS programming teaches good nutrition and healthy lifestyle management by thematically integrating healthy dietary offerings in school cafeterias, educational curricula for children, parents, and school staff, increased physical activity, and other educational projects such as school gardens. HOPS utilizes an intervention-control group design, which allows assessment of efficacy of programmatic interventions, and includes approximately 4713 children (48% Hispanic) attending six elementary schools (4 intervention; 2 control).
