Abstract

Oxidative stress is proposed to contribute to schizophrenia (SZ) pathophysiology. Some oxidant sources, such as mitochondria, are ubiquitous in the brain, but others, such as dopamine degradation, are brain region-dependent. SZ is associated with excess striatal dopamine that is most pronounced in dorsal striatum (DS) relative to ventral striatum (VS) and is not present in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). We investigated the possibility that markers of oxidative stress and damage are most pronounced in DS relative to VS and DLPFC in SZ subjects.
