Abstract

Spontaneous activity refines cortical circuits in the developing brain. In animals, spontaneous activity in sensory regions evolves from globally synchronized to decorrelated as the cortex transitions from plastic to mature. Here, we leverage the fact that synchronized bursts in intrinsic activity are a functional hallmark of plastic cortices to characterize the unfolding of activity-indexed plasticity in youth. We hypothesized that age-related changes in spontaneous activity would differ between early-maturing sensorimotor cortices and late-maturing association cortices.
