Abstract

To investigate the prevalence of atypical hyperplasia or endometrial cancer in endometrial polyps detected in patients with and without symptoms. In our department from 1 January 2005 through to 31 March 2007, we retrospectively reviewed 153 women with sonographic diagnosis of endometrial polyp. All patients underwent transvaginal ultrasound combined with power Doppler imaging. Operative hysteroscopy with hystopathological examination was the gold standard. Benign endometrial polyps, typical hyperplasia, atypical hyperplasia and cancer were 74%, 19.5%, 5.2% and 1.3% respectively. Two polypoid cancer were found. The prevalence of atypical hyperplasia and malignancy was found to be relatively high, indicating that endometrial polyps should be removed.
