Abstract

HYPOTHESIS: Intervertebral disc (IVD) ischaemia is a major factor in nucleus pulposus degeneration. Neovascularisation may be an important process in the spontaneous resolution of acute IVD herniation. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of hypoxia and secondary acidosis on nucleus pulposus secretion of the angiogenic factors interleukin-8 (IL-8) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
