Abstract

Previous evidence in adults suggests the involvement of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation in the development of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, less is known in the context of depression in adolescence and young adulthood, in particular in low-and-middle-income countries. To address this, we conducted a meta-analysis of worldwide studies investigating the relationship between cortisol, as a measure of HPA axis activity, and MDD in youth.
