Abstract

Since the legalization of recreational cannabis use in Canada in 2018, one public health concern emerging is whether cannabis use will increase in people with mental illness. Relative to the general population, problematic cannabis use is elevated in psychiatric patients, including schizophrenia, mood and anxiety disorders, and PTSD. Moreover, problematic cannabis use is associated with more severe psychopathology and poorer functional outcomes. Thus, there is a need to evaluate whether legalization has led to changes in cannabis use patterns among psychiatric populations.
