Abstract

Background: Concerns over the oncological adequacy of laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer has slowed it’s acceptance into surgical practice. While the short term benefits of this procedure have been established, the long term oncologic outcomes have yet to be proven. Several large randomized controlled trials evaluating oncologic outcomes in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer are available for meta-analysis. Objective: To evaluate current available literature on the oncologic outcomes in patients undergoing laparoscopic resection for colorectal cancer and perform a meta-analysis on the primary outcomes of cancer related deaths and recurrence of colorectal cancer.
