Abstract

RATIONALE: Eczema vaccinatum is a potentially fatal complication that develops in a subset of atopic dermatitis (AD) patients following smallpox vaccination with vaccinia virus (VV). Recently, it was shown that p21, a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, regulates genes important for barrier function and is decreased in the skin of AD patients. The current study investigated whether global down-regulation of p21 increases the susceptibility to develop EV.
