Abstract

In order to shorten outage period of annual inspection, fixed type guide rods are expected to be used in the ABWR. Guide rods are used to install the RPV internals such as steam separator and steam dryer. However, guide rods are planned to be located near the main steam nozzles which act as steam flow meter elements, therefore flow-induced vibration (FIV) and Karman vortex effect on flow measurement are examined in this study. The 1/1.87-scale model tests and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis both for the tests and actual ABWR were conducted. As the result of CFD calculation, reduced damping was more than 5 and reduced velocity was approximately 1.44,therefore resonance will not occur for fixed type guide rods. Then guide rod effect on steam flow measurement was examined by using the scaled model test to the higher Reynolds number of (10)^7. The test results showed the stable flow measurements for wide range of flow rate. Thus, structural integrity against FIV and stable steam flow measurement were confirmed to adopt the fixed type guide rods in the ABWR.
