Abstract
Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a cortical autonomic network (CAN) associated with reflex cardiovascular control has been identified. During volitional exercise, widespread activation and deactivation patterns are observed, some of which have been associated with central command [1]. However, whether these patterns reflect the processing of afferent skeletal muscle receptor information is less clear. Findings from our laboratory have demonstrated a role for somatosensory stimuli in increasing vagal activity.
