Abstract

It is estimated over one million athletes utilize anabolic steroids in an attempt to gain a competitive edge in the United States alone. Most often these drugs and the information about their use and side effects are obtained from non-physician sources. These steroids, typically testosterone esters, are usually administered by intramuscular injection. Local infections and abscess formation at the injection site have been described. We report the unusual case of an enlarging, symptomatic, noninfectious gluteal pseudotumor caused by intramuscular injection of anabolic steroids and review the literature on the topic.
