Abstract

The aims of the current study were to investigate the correlation of ABO blood group with clinicopathological characteristics in patients with laryngeal cancer and to assess whether the ABO blood group was associated with prognosis. A total of 1,260 patients with laryngeal cancer who underwent curative treatment between January 1993 and December 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. No significant association was found between clinicopathological characteristics and ABO group. The median OS times for patients with blood types A, B, AB, and O were 87.0, 80.0, 90.0, and 72.5 months, respectively. The 3-, 5- and 10-year OS rates were 82.4%, 76.0%, and 67.5% for patients with blood type A; 77.4%, 69.8%, and 58.4% for patients with type B; 82.2%, 73.1%, and 65.6% for patients with type AB; and 71.7%, 66.4%, and 55.5% for patients with type O, respectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed an unfavorable and independent impact of blood type O on the survival of patients with laryngeal cancer. ABO blood group is associated with survival in laryngeal cancer; patients with blood type O had significantly lower OS than patients with non-O blood types.
