Abstract

Addressing translatable evidence gaps (prediction, prevention, treatments, services) could improve maternal, fetal, child and family health and wellbeing now and for future generations. GenV aims to create large, parallel whole-of-state birth and parent cohorts to support both discovery and interventional research, with lasting change in the landscape of large-scale research for mothers, parents and babies. Funded and authorised by the Victorian Government with the Paul Ramsay Foundation, the GenV Cohort 2020 s is open to all 150,000 Victorian newborns October 2021-Sept 2023 and their parents. At its foundation are consent, existing (including prospective pre-conception and pregnancy) data and biosamples; GenV-specific survey, event and phenotypic data; the melding of observational and intervention design; and geospatial, clinical and linked administrative datasets. GenV recruiters are based in every Victorian birthing hospital with virtual recruitment available for those missed during the birth admission. Since October 2017, GenV has built infrastructure including -80°C robotic biostore, IT platform, ethics and protocol development, and hospital, pathology and other agreements, and numerous collaborations. GenV’s Vanguard launched at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital in December 2020 and, following a 5-month scale up, the GenV Cohort 2020 s commenced in October 2021. By March 24 th 2022, over 13,000 Victorian families (over 33,000 participants) had signed up to GenV. GenV aims to be highly inclusive with 22% of participants from regional Victoria and 10% whose primary spoken language at home is not English. GenV’s Pregnancy, Newborns, Trials and Registries Working Groups are creating numerous collaborative capabilities and opportunities that we will share along with further progress. We welcome ongoing input from midwifery colleagues to tailor GenV to maximally advance its value to this audience.
