Abstract

To report one-center experience with the use of amniocentesis in the detection of microbial invasion of amniotic cavity (MIAC) in pregnancies complicated by preterm prelabour rupture of membranes (PPROM). Ultrasound-guided transabdominal amniocenteses were performed in singleton pregnancies complicated by PPROM in gestational age between 24 + 0 and 36 + 6. Amniotic fluid was analyzed using polymerase chain reactions for genital mycoplasmas and cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. In total, 393 women agreed with the procedure. The sample of amniotic fluid was successfully obtained in 370 (94%) of them. No procedure-related complications were observed. MIAC was found in 118 (30%) women with genital mycoplasmas as most frequent bacteria in 79 (67%) cases. Amniocentesis could be considered as a safe and feasible procedure offering the determination of microbial invasion of amniotic cavity in PPROM pregnancies.
