Abstract
Introduction: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of proteolytic enzymes capable of degrading collagen and elastin within the aortic wall. Because overproduction of aortic MMPs has emerged as an important factor in infrarenal aortic aneurysm formation, drugs that inhibit MMPs are being studied in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms. The role of MMPs in descending thoracic aortic dissection, however, is not clear. Establishing that MMPs contribute to aortic degeneration after dissection could lead to new treatments.
