Abstract

Head mounted displays (HMD) for virtual reality (VR) require superior electro‐optical properties such as high resolution over 2000 ppi and super‐fast response time in order to realizing super image quality at near‐eyes. Conventional liquid crystal (LC) devices utilizing fringe‐field switching (FFS) mode, having response times less than half of conventional FFS mode, contrast ratio is still less than 2000 : 1, and resolution over 1000 ppi were proposed. In this paper, we propose a vertically aligned liquid crystal device with use of positive dielectric anisotropy LC, which shows high resolution over 2000 ppi, higher contrast ratio and 4 times faster decay response time than that of conventional FFS mode.
