Abstract

Introduction: Subpectoral tissue expander and implant based breast reconstruction involves the insertion of a tissue expander under the pectoralis major muscle and overlying skin. It is inflated over a number of months and eventually replaced with a definitive implant. Expander/implant based reconstruction can be undertaken at the time of mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date (delayed reconstruction). Implant related complications include implant displacement, infection or rupture.
