Abstract

In order to generate stable and uniform pretilt angle below 85 deg. for vertical LC alignment, a polymer-stabilized (PS) technique with a bias voltage (BPS), which is combined with a photo-alignment method, has been proposed. By the BPS method using a LC medium doped with a small amount of UV-curable LC monomer (<2wt%), we achieve a very low pretilt angle as much as 80deg. showing an extreme stability against temperature changes. This method is applied to the fabrication of vertically-aligned (VA)-STN-LCDs, and we succeed in obtaining very steep voltage vs. transmittance (VT) characteristics, which enables the VA-STN-LCD to provide a high multiplexing capability and thus indicates the usefulness of the BPS technique to fabricate VA-STN-LCDs.
