Abstract

Introduction: Severe peripheral arterial disease (PAD) can lead to amputation and premature mortality. Our objective was to compare clinical data and arterial plaque morphology in alive patients versus dead patients after amputation. Methods: Lower extremity arterial specimens were obtained from patients that underwent either an above (n=44) or below knee (n=23) amputation between 2004-06. These specimens were pressure perfused and imaged using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) ex vivo. Sequential IVUS data obtained at known intervals throughout the vessel length were analyzed with radio-frequency techniques for quantification of plaque composition, plaque volume, and total vessel volume.
