Abstract

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The appropriate surgical approach for internal fixation of a cervical spine fracture can be controversial. Biomechanical data suggests that a posterior approach for fixation may result in more stability when compared to an anterior approach. A morphologic classification system has recently been described that attempts to quantify instability. It is unknown if this classification can provide guidance in choosing a surgical approach to unstable cervical fractures.
