Abstract

Staging of mediastinal lymph nodes in NSCLC defines the extent of thoracic malignancies and the disease process. It is based on the American Joint Committee for Cancer (AJCC), TNM staging system, which describes the best anatomic extent of the disease. This defines operability and surgical resectability, neoadjuvant therapy and predicting prognostic survivability. A well-conducted literature search and review undertaken. All papers or studies in the last 10 years were identified and studied. Surgical and non-surgical staging methods were identified, compared and analyzed for their sensitivity and specificity. Size, location and characteristics of tumor, local invasion or extension, lymphadenopathy and metastatic disease spread were identified as parameters. Early accurate staging improves overall outcomes if therapeutic interventions are well-organized and executed in a timely fashion. Careful selection of staging methods is crucial.
