Abstract

Introduction: The associations of Helicobacter pylori with gastritis, gastric ulcer and with duodenal gastric surface meta-plasma are well established in adult. In children is also accepted the suggestion of gastric surface metaplasia. Nodular antritis in children is associated with lymphoid hyperplasia and the presence of Helicobacter pylori. Methods: Thirty two children with nodular antritis were evaluated by endoscopy, ureasa test to determinate the presence of Helicobacter infection. Histological studies of the antrus by gastric biopsy, were performed looking for a correlation with lymphoid hyperplasia. Results: The 87,5 % of children with nodular antritis nodular reveled positive Helicobacter pylori ureasa test. Only one case had normal mucosa. The 56% was mild chronic gastritis, 37% moderate and one case with severe damage and atrophy of antral mucosa. Lynphoid hyperplasia was present in 22 (68,7%) patients and only two of them were negative to Helicobacter pylori test. In one case with moderate gastritis had metaplasia in gastric biopsia. Conclusion: Hyperplasia and nodular gastritis appear to be more frequent in children than in adults. The results suggest that Helicobacter pylori could produce an important damage to gastric mucosa since childhood
