Abstract

Aims & Objectives: Humanizing Medicine is personalizing care, to make our patients feel satisfied with the care received. We describe approaches to humanize pediatric critical care units, since we are convinced that to ensure optimal outcomes for the patient it is necessary to pay attention to not only to the technological aspects, but also to the environment, the family and the healthcare professionals. Methods: We present the measures implemented toward humanizing medicine in a pediatric and neonatal intensive care unit in Spain since its opening to the present. In 2016, a working group was created to work on developmental and family-centered care. In 2019, a grief guide was developed by a multidisciplinary group (Psychiatry, Gynecology and Pediatrics). A fundraising campaign was organized to purchase a sound meter. In 2017, a Hospital Humanization Working Group was created. Results: The measures implemented have been: Open doors unit; clown program; attention to grief; memories box; music-therapy; game material; developmental and family centered care; psychological assistance to parents of premature children; environmental awareness (light, noise), sleep protection and noise level detection. These measures are aligned with the strategic lines proposed in the main humanization plans for critical care units. Conclusions: The concept of humanization is closely linked to quality, and consists of comprehensive care for the needs of patients and their families, guided by a set of values to make their stay more humane. Sensitizing health professionals to be able to carry out all these humanization actions is essential if we want to witness a change in the care model.
