Abstract

A technique to weld conducting very-thin wires utilizing current-induced heating, i.e., Joule heating, has been reported. A constant direct current was applied to the system, where the free ends of two very-thin wires were contacted, and the ends were successfully welded. It was confirmed that the technique is very effective, not only for welding similar wires, but also dissimilar ones. In the case of the dissimilar welding of Pt wire and Au wire, the welding was achieved by the melt of Au wire having lower melting point.
