Abstract

Aims & Objectives: To determine correlation between DCO2 and PaCO2 in neonatal users under high frequency oscillatory ventilation. Methods: Prospective cohort study in all neonates users connected to hybrid-HFOV, we registered DCO2 (by mechanical ventilator) and PaCO2 values (by ABG’s) every 24 hours. We reported descriptive and concordance analysis using lineal regression model. Results: 60 measurements was obtained from 10 neonates at university hospital in Santiago, Chile. Median weight was 4.1 (3.9; 4.7) Kg; diagnosis were 4 (6.7%) neonatal asphyxia, 46 (76.7%) congenital diaphragmatic hernia and 10 (16.7%) meconium aspiration syndrome. The correlation between DCO2 and PaCO2 was low (r= .24), determination coefficient (R2) was .06. However, correlation improved when adjust the model by pH and gestacional age (r= .73; R2= .53). Conclusions: The correlation between DCO2 and PaCO2 is low. DCO2 value has little clinical relevance as PCO2 estimator.
