Abstract

The patient was young nulliparous woman, who presented in 37th week of pregnancy with a suspicion of cerebral tumor in the fetus. In the ultrasound examination we diagnosed slightly hypoechoic, homogenic, well-delineated structure, with peripheral vasculature, located in right temporal lobe. The size of the lesion was 53 × 35 mm. We did not observe any significant shift of the cerebral midline structures and no ventriculomegaly. All parameters (ultrasound, Doppler, CTG) indicated normal fetal wellbeing. We performed prenatal MRI of the fetal brain. In the MRI there was a suspicion of a cerebral meningioma. The baby was delivered by cesarean section at term, in good condition and it was operated in 7th week of life because of rapid tumor growth. The pathological examination revealed desmoplastic infantile astrocytoma (DIA, WHO G I). The size of the tumor was 70 × 60 × 50 mm. The baby is now 1 year old, has a discrete spastic hemiplegia and seizures. There are no signs of local recurrence in the brain, but there is ventriculomegaly with Evans ratio 52%.
