Abstract

in 4 patients, providing diagnostic information regarding LV function-morphology in all 4 cases. TOE indications; insertion, wean, decompensation, alteration in ECMO flow, intracardiac thrombus and RV/LV function. Echocardiographic results that influenced management were; detection of cannula thrombus (3), RV/LVEF assessment during weaning (5), causes for acute decompensation (haematoma causing tamponade = 1, malposition of cannulae = 2), detection of LVOTO-SAM (1). Conclusion: Echocardiography plays a critical role in managing patients supported by ECMO. It provides important information in relation to guiding cannulae placement, measurement of RV/LV function, assessment of myocardial recovery and detection of complications.
