Abstract

Introduction: Implementation of the EU Working Time Directive had lead to a reduction in doctors working times. Changes in medical training have led to a loss of expertise in middle grade doctors. This has opened up the way for experienced nurses, especially in speciality’s to develop their practice. Nurses at a specialist Liver Unit have developed new services in line with these opportunities.1,2 We report on how nurse led developments have contributed to healthcare. Methods: Analysis of the roles undertaken by Liver Unit nurses. Results: The following activities form the team role: To assess and meet information needs of children of all ages and their families. To notify and build on networks of care within the children’s own primary healthcare and shared care teams so that discharge is planned and co-ordinated. To act as a resource for nursing and general management advice (particularly vaccinations) for all our children throughout the country. To be involved in education of healthcare professionals internally, nationally and at an international level. To run a nurse led telephone consultation service called Liver Direct for two sessions a day. To run nurse led viral hepatitis clinics. To participate in the out reach clinics to other cities in the UK. Currently 11 clinics in the last 12 months. To co-ordinate the management of immunosuppression for 400 patients including liaison with pharmacy for home delivery of immunosuppressant medication. To initiate nursing related research, audit our roles and support the research and audit activity of the wider liver unit team. Conclusion: Experienced nurses have developed a number of roles that provide accurate information and continuity for families and healthcare professionals involved in their care.
