Abstract

The article analyzes the problem of drunkenness as a social phenomenon of the late 19th - early 20th centuries on the basis of periodicals and scientific sources of the period under study. It is shown that the problem of drunkenness was considered in the study period not only as a disease, but also as spiritual promiscuity. It was revealed that the fight against drunkenness was protracted and ineffective. The authorities did not pay due attention to this problem, and the sobriety societies did not cope with the tasks set. All this caused discontent on the part of the people and provoked the emergence of popular initiatives.
