Abstract

We look to Elliott Smith's life through post-racionalism model to understand a desperate and painful existence that leads him to commit suicide Born August 6, 1969 in Nebraska. His parents divorced when he was six months old. Smith was victim of physical and sexual abuse by his stepfather. At age thirteen he moved to Portland to live with his father. He started using drugs. He starts composing music to escape of his hard past. 1998. Smith was nominated for an Academy Award for “Miss Misery”, after this he falls into depression. He makes his first suicide attempt by running off a cliff. Smith's health began to deteriorate when started using heroin. After breaking up with his then-girlfriend; he determined to rehab. Elliott Smith died on October 21, 2003, at 34 years as a result of two self inflicted stabs to the chest. Elliott would be considered a depresive personality. In this type of attachment, parents are perceived as dismissive or indifferent. The child is forced to rely on himself to manage and face his social environment The organization of the self pass through: a first level: the immediate experience (loneliness and helplessness). a second level: Construction of a conscious image of the self. The adolescent with depressive sense: 1. Try to gain access to the world, being recognized and loved. 2. are driven to build other realities. Suffering a break up, makes re-experiencing “pain” that can lead to depressed people to: 1) use anesthetic effect substances. 2) Comitting suicide
