Abstract

Defective embryo implantation may result in early pregnancy loss; or an abnormally prolonged inflammatory phase leading to an abnormal trophoblastic invasion with the consequent risk of developing fetal growth restriction (FGR), preeclampsia and placental abruption. We have previously published alterations in uterine perfusion in certain subgroups of infertile patients. High impedance to blood flow in uterine arteries during pregnancy is associated with poorer obstetric outcome. The incidence of FGR in the general population is reported to be between 5-10%.
