Abstract
A LED direct backlight system with ultra-thin thickness by employing side emitting LEDs is proposed. The lens cap on the LEDs is with metal reflection coating to re-direct the light to emit from the side of LED. Prior to this method, the light mixing cavity of a LED Backlight module is thicker than 50mm for obtaining uniform illumination. By using the proposed LED package, a 30mm thick light mixing cavity of a 32″ LED backlight is realized. The simulation and experiment of the illumination performance are also demonstrated.
